Concrete that Allows Water to Pass Through

The Throop Company has worked with various brands of pervious concrete. Depending on your particular needs, there are multiple brands that can meet your needs. The most recent products Throop has worked with are Rain-Crete® and GraniteCrete® and we wanted to expand on their particular features.

The George L. Throop Company has many years of experience with volumetric concrete
production and can work with any brand of pervious concrete.

Rain-Crete vs GraniteCrete

Rain-Crete:

Rain-Crete is a porous concrete that eliminates the need for a detention/retention and water quality pond by capturing storm water and filtering it to groundwater. Rain-Crete has been formulated for convenient use with volumetric trucks.

When fully cured, Rain-Crete exceeds 4,000 psi, making it tough and strong enough for roads. It is strong enough for commercial vehicles and porous enough to eliminate black ice and standing water from heavy rain. Rain-Crete is reliable even after up to 19 years since installation.

Rain-Crete is recommended for use for driveways, patios, sidewalks, pool decks, sport courts, parking lots, roads and the elimination of retention, detention & water quality ponds. No more ponding of water that takes up space, needs continuing maintenance, and are a haven for reproducing mosquitoes.

GraniteCrete:

GraniteCrete, a type of permeable paving, offers several advantages, including its ability to reduce storm water runoff, replenish groundwater, and improve water quality. It also provides a durable, natural-looking surface that can withstand foot and light vehicular traffic, while being environmentally friendly and potentially meeting LEED requirements.

Key Differences and Considerations between Rain-Crete and GraniteCrete

    • Material: GraniteCrete utilizes decomposed granite with a proprietary cementitious blend as a binder, while Rain-Crete is a type of pervious concrete that uses small crushed rock, type II cement with a proprietary admixture.
    • Specific Features: GraniteCrete emphasizes its aesthetic appeal, weed deterrence, and environmental benefits like urban heat island mitigation. Rain-Crete is highlighted for its high strength suitable for heavy traffic applications.
    • Cost: Cost will vary depending on location of project, number of cubic yards, application it is used for, accessibility and other minor issues.

Summary

GraniteCrete is a good fit if you prioritize environmental benefits, aesthetic appeal, a natural look and feel, weed deterrence, and potentially reduced installation complexity. On the other hand, Rain-Crete will work if you need a strong pervious concrete solution, particularly for vehicle traffic areas like roads, sport courts, walkways, and driveways.

Choosing between GraniteCrete and Rain-Crete pervious concrete depends on your specific needs and priorities, as they are both distinct permeable paving solutions with different characteristics.
